About LMPC
Our Identity
who we uniquely are
We are a large, parish, resource church for the sake of God’s Kingdom.
Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church was organized October 16, 1892. Through the years, LMPC has ministered to the spiritual needs of the people in this community, holding aloft the light of the Gospel of the love of God in Christ to let it shine to the ends of the earth.
Our Vision
What we long to see happen
For God’s glory, we desire to be a church who:
- exalts Christ wholeheartedly
- engages people graciously
- equips disciples biblically
- extends resources generously
Our Values
how our beliefs guide our behavior
Primacy of the Gospel
The Gospel is not just the entryway to relationship with God, but also the means to growth in God. The Gospel is found only in the person and work of Jesus Christ through the revelation of God’s Word. At LMPC we are relentlessly attentive to God’s Word and its authority and application in all things.
Vitality of Worship
Our busy, distracted lives require that we regularly reconnect with God and reorient ourselves to live by his truth. Therefore, we form weekly worship services that are robust, historic, liturgical, and varied. With hearts inflamed, we become emboldened to engage daily in worship of God alone.
Indispensability of the Church
God uses the church to bring the realities of his Kingdom to earth. The church is a body, and its head is Christ. The body cannot grow without remaining connected to its head. In order for us to grow as God designed, it is essential to intentionally belong to a church. As a local body in the Reformed tradition, we are consciously a part of and actively connected to the larger church in our city and around the world.
Necessity of Prayer
We cling to the words of Jesus: “Apart from me you can do nothing.” We recognize our dependence on God as we pray regularly as individuals and with each other. Our prayer focus is as Jesus taught us: for his glory alone as his Kingdom advances and as he accomplishes his will in all things.
Centrality of Community
The biblical repetition of ‘one another’ sets the tone for the Christian life. Therefore, we emphasize life together in relationships and in groups that are marked by truth, transparency, and loving care for each other. Our pastors lead as a team, establishing a culture for all our leaders of listening to one another and valuing the wisdom of the community.
Priority of Mission
The Kingdom of God is moving toward the renewal of all things, and therefore all of life is mission. God’s mission embraces cross-like sacrifice and calls us to extend generous service to others. We pursue this mission not only in our own sphere of influence, but also beyond – on our mountain, in our city, and around the world.
Our Philosophy of Ministry
how we accomplish the mission
Warming our hearts together in Christ.
Corporate Worship: Bonfire
The large group avenue provides opportunity for growth in grace as we gather for weekly worship, hear the faithful preaching of God’s Word, join together in Sunday School for learning and loving, and participate in regular enrichment during conferences and retreats.
Small Groups: Campfire
The small group avenue provides opportunity for growth in grace as we enjoy discovering the riches of the Gospel in weekly small groups throughout the community. Small groups at LMPC include mixed small groups (in age, stage, and gender), men’s groups, women’s groups, and prayer groups.
Personal Devotions: Candle
The one-on-one avenue provides opportunity for growth in grace as we apply what we have learned about the glory and grace of God as we walk, eat, drink coffee, play, and live together. To grow in grace we must be together in relationship and friendship. Growth is a result of our taking initiative and showing relational intentionality with one another.
Spreading the light and warmth of Christ.
Beliefs & Denomination
Our beliefs are derived from Scripture, are known in doctrine as Reformed and Covenantal, and are best expressed in the Calvinistic creeds, particularly the Westminster Confession of Faith with the Larger and Shorter Catechisms. LMPC is a member of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA).
